Anonymize a signed PDF: what happens to the signature

Anonymize the text of a signed PDF without uploading it. Note: the result is text, so the digital signature is not kept; the signed original does not change.

About this tool

A digitally signed PDF carries a seal certifying the content has not changed since it was signed. Any change, including anonymizing it, breaks that certification. That is not a flaw of the tool: it is what the signature is for.

Here the result is text with placeholders, not a modified PDF, so the signature is not kept. Your signed original stays intact on your device. If you need to share the signed document, share it as it is; if you need an AI to read it without your data, use the anonymized text.

How it works

  1. 01

    Drop the PDF.

  2. 02

Leave “Anonymize personal data” on and convert.

  3. 03

Review each highlighted item; switch anonymization off to compare.

  4. 04

Copy or download the text, and keep the map if you will restore the data.

Questions

Do I get a blacked-out PDF?
No, on purpose. The result is text (Markdown) with placeholders such as [NOMBRE_1] instead of the data. We do not do destructive redaction: nothing is destroyed, and with the map you can put the real data back into the AI's answer.
Does it catch every piece of personal data?
Not always. It works by rules: ID and tax numbers, emails, phones, dates, addresses and names when labelled. An oddly formatted value can slip through: review the result before sharing.
Can I anonymize and keep the signature?
No, with any tool: the signature certifies the content did not change. The anonymized document would have to be signed again.
