Accessibility
Anyone should be able to merge, compress or redact a document, including with a keyboard, a screen reader or zoom. This page says what we have done, how we checked it, and what we know still fails.
Last reviewed:
Goal
- Our goal is to meet level AA of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2.
- It is a goal, not a certification: no external party has audited the site.
What is already done
- A “Skip to content” link is the first thing the Tab key reaches on every page.
- Text and buttons have a contrast of at least 4.5:1, including secondary text and the coloured buttons.
- When you choose files, focus moves to the panel heading; when a job finishes, to the Download button. It never falls into nowhere.
- Screen readers announce “Processing…”, the result with its name and size, and any error, without moving focus.
- If you drop a file the tool does not take, it tells you and links to the tool that opens it.
- Small buttons (up, down, remove, rotate) are at least 24 px, and 44 px on touch screens.
- Everything works with a keyboard: file order has ↑ ↓ buttons besides dragging, and option groups are traversed with the arrow keys.
- The mobile menu closes with Escape and returns focus to the button that opened it.
- Animations are reduced when your system asks for less motion.
How we checked
- axe-core 4.13 on the main pages, the tools, the blog and the documentation: no serious or critical failures as of the review date.
- Full keyboard-only runs through the most used tools.
- Automated tests in a real browser on every change (drag, paste, errors and results).
- It has not yet been tested by people who use a screen reader every day. That is next, and it is the test we care about most.
Known issues
- Page thumbnails in Organize, Delete and Extract are only announced as “Page N”: a screen reader does not say what each page contains.
- In Organize, reordering by dragging has no screen reader equivalent beyond the ← → buttons, and the new order is not announced.
- The output of PDF to Markdown and of OCR is long text with no navigable structure until you download it.
- Some tables in the technical documentation come from Markdown and may have terse headers.
