About this tool

The letting agency, the bank, a new employer: they all want a copy of your ID, and that copy ends up in an inbox or a shared folder you don't control. With it someone can open an account, apply for credit or impersonate you elsewhere.

A copy that says what it was given for, to whom and when still works for that purpose and is marked for any other. The text repeats across the whole document, in two colours over wavy lines, so cropping a corner is not enough.

Uploading a photo of your ID to a server to protect it is exactly the risk you want to avoid. Here the mark is drawn in your browser: the image never leaves your device, and the copy comes out without the photo's metadata, GPS location included.

How it works

  1. 01

Drop the photo or PDF of your ID (front and back together is fine).

  2. 02

Type what the copy is for and, optionally, who receives it. Today's date is filled in.

  3. 03

Check the preview, adjust the strength and download.

Questions

Can the mark be removed?
With time and good tools, yes: no watermark is indelible, and be wary of anyone who promises otherwise. What this one does is make removal costly: it covers the whole surface, is merged into the pixels, and there is no object for a PDF editor to delete. A retouched copy also tends to show.
Which formats does it accept?
JPG, PNG, WEBP and HEIC (iPhone) photos, and PDF. A photo keeps its format (PNG stays PNG, the rest become JPG); a PDF comes out as a PDF with the same page size.
Why is the resulting PDF's text not selectable?
Because the mark is merged into the page. If the text stayed text underneath, copying it would give a clean version.
Does it work for a passport, driving licence or certificate?
Yes. It works on any document: the text is whatever you type.
What should I write as the purpose?
The specific process: “flat 302 rental”, “bank account opening”, “health insurance”. The more specific it is, the less useful the copy is for anything else.
